Laurier Macdonald is a senior high school offering a variety of curriculum options for students coming from an ever increasing community base The school is easily accessible from MUC bus lines 32 and 144. Our facility houses an auditorium, 2 gymnasia, a swimming pool, 2 art rooms, 4 science labs, 4 computer labs, a video conference lab, 2 media production labs, a television studio, a radio station, a library with multimedia lab and a second language learning lab.
All students pursue studies in the approved Ministry of Education, Leisure and Sports General Studies Program. Within this framework, students benefit from the choice of an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program –IBMYP [students complete the first two years of this five year program at our sister school John Paul I High School], a Bilingual Studies Program which offers 33% of instruction in the French language or an English Core Program. Students requiring program adaptation benefit from Resource Support in English, French, and Mathematics. Resource classes are taught by subject area specialists. Students in the IBMYP or Bilingual Program may select a Français langue d’enseignement course.
Media Studies is a school wide compulsory program designed to offer all students the opportunity to explore the power of media communication.
Learning about production methods develops an understanding of the power of media to influence popular opinion. The highlight of this program is the annual media showcase.
Student life is promoted through a variety of extracurricular activities: an active student council/leadership program, a range of foreign travel opportunities, School Spirit Week, the Homecoming celebration, as well as extramural and intramural sports including the local World Cup of Soccer.
The learning environment is further enriched with a high degree of parental involvement through membership in both our Governing Board and Parent Participation Organization.
Laurier Macdonald enjoys a proud reputation as an involved community member. The school prides itself on contributing to the community at large through its participation in a wide array of charitable works. These include the Christmas food drive, the Spirit of Giving, Seniors’ Night, our Huggies project which provides not only toys, but funds for the purchase of equipment at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, participation in the Brainwaves Gala supporting neurological research into brain cancer.
In 2007 Laurier Macdonald opened its Community Learning Center which links students with social services within the community as well as providing educational opportunities for members of the east end community.
An active alumni maintains close ties with the current student population as well as school wide academic and social events.
